I have been meaning to blog about this for the past few days but haven’t had a chance to sit still long enough to do it. I recently set my drums up in the dining room of my house (no, there’s no table or chairs in there, just drums). I am trying to hit around on them a little bit when I can find the time and when I think the neighbors are in good spirits… Basically, I have played them like 3 times since I set them up a week or so ago.
I came home from work Thursday night and when I walked through the door I saw something emerging from within my bass drum. It was my cat Jaycee, a.k.a. el gato grande*. I couldn’t get to my camera in time to get any shots of her, so I tried to shove her back in the bass drum but she wasn’t having it. I set my camera out on the island in my kitchen hoping she would go back in there at some point that night, but she didn’t.
Friday night when I came home from work I jumped in the shower real quick. When I was taking my dirty clothes/towel/washcloth to the laundry room I saw that Jaycee was in the bass drum again. Sweet! I tried as hard as I could not to pay any attention to her because I knew she would come out of the drum and want to give her daddy some loving. I quickly threw my dirty clothes in the laundry room and grabbed my camera.
Before you see the photos below, let me tell you this. I have played my drums in many places. Garages, band practice rooms, churches, clubs, flatbed trailers in the middle of fields, etc. After reviewing these shots, it appears that at some point in time something was spilled on the front head (non-batter side) of my bass drum. Since I haven’t played my drums in a few years they have acquired quite a bit of dust and this sticky, runny substance on my bass head has collected a lot of it and looks kind of nasty. Just overlook that and check out the wonderful cat inside that is Jaycee.
Jaycee even got in a little “lovey” mood and decided to go inverted. She does that when she is extremely happy and wants to show her daddy love. I don’t know, maybe it didn’t have anything to do with me and she was just working it for the camera!
Drumroll please (no pun intended)! Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the dismount!
Patience everybody! This dismount technique requires a lot of concentration.
Remember, there is a whole lot of cat stuck in that little hole on my bass drum head. She is highly skilled and, like a snake works large prey through its body, she knows how to contract and work her fat so that she can fit her being into tight places.
She’s almost completed the dismount process. Please hold your applause until she is walking away from the drum. Any distraction at this point could cause me to have to replace a drum head.
And she made it! There hasn’t been any drum heads, or cats, harmed in the shooting of these photographs. She has been in the drum a number of times throughout the weekend. I hope to clean my drum head up and get some more shots soon. Anyway, I thought I would share this with all of my faithful readers. You two know who you are!
* While searching Google to see if I had the spelling of “el gato grande” correct, I stumbled upon a Flickr photo set by rebuffering titled El Gato Grande. The ironic (queue Alanis Morissette here) thing is that the cat featured in that photo set is also a grey tabby cat. While the cat in their photo set may be big, I think mine is definitely fatter! Maybe all gray tabbys are big boned or something….
Until next time…

Wow! Those pictures don’t do the size of your cat justice. That thing is huge and looking at the size of the hole in your bass drum the other night in person, I can’t believe she fit through the hole. I guess you were right….if her head would fit, then she’ll fit.

I love it! Thanks for sharing the pictures and the wonderful cat that is Jaycee! I’m glad that she is supportive of your having drums in the dining room. Of course, I’m sure that would change if they interfered in any way with her food supply!
