Welcome to the World of Warcraft

I know at times I am a late bloomer when it comes to certain mainstream games and technologies, but I finally opened and installed my copy of World of Warcraft last night. A good friend of mine, Adrian (also a contributor on average admins), was in town and said he had been putting some time in to the game with some of the guys he works with at Digium. I told him that I had an unopened box of the game and that I was interested in trying it out but needed a little hand holding. He took on the challenge of showing Cocoa Crusty (unfortunately, seen in the game as “Cocoacrusty”) the ropes and some nifty tricks in World of Warcraft (WoW).

I am playing WoW on my MacBook and it runs flawlessly. I like playing it in windowed mode so I can Exposé around my other windows and applications at the same time if need be. I played for a few hours last night and didn’t notice and kind of performance issues or latency while playing the game at all. It is very nice to do some gaming on a laptop these days and not have to rely on a desktop PC for gaming.

I purchased the Burning Crusade expansion pack for WoW and am currently playing a Blood Elf Paladin. I am just kicking it and doing quests to gain experience points. I believe I am a level 5 right now but I may be or may be nearing level 6. I can’t remember and I’m too lazy to fire up WoW and take a look.

The game reminds me a lot of another massively multiplayer online role playing game, or MMORPG, that I used to play a lot, Runescape. While Runescape is fun, it is a Java based game, which means cross-platform compatibility, but it is also lacking in some areas that installable games excel. For instance, the graphics on WoW are pretty impressive, even running on my MacBook. Audio is great, performance is what you would expect from a video game, no latency, etc. In Runescape, or most Java based applications and games, these areas are lacking due to portability. WoW has it all!

If you enjoy great looking video games, and MMORPGs specifically, this game might be for you, too. It is like Runescape on steroids! It is very awesome in every respect from what I have seen thus far and I regret not trying it sooner. Anyway, Adrian should be getting back to Alabama later this evening and I believe we are going to kick it around WoW and do some exploring and leveling up!

Until next time…
