Gravatar 2.0 Launched Then Plummeted

WordPress logoI have been keeping up with the new version of Gravatar 2.0 that was released this month (February 15th). This service allows you to have a common avatar across multiple sites that use the Gravatar service. You register for an account at gravatar.com, upload an 80×80 pixel image you want to use as an avatar, and then see your nifty avatar show up auto-magically on blogs and forums that utilize this feature, cocoacrusty.com included.

This morning I saw that the service still appeared to be up. I had been watching the performance of the site thinking that after 2.0 was launched there might be a huge influx of requests to the site which could bring it to its knees. I upgraded my Gravatar account to a premium account for $10 a year so that I can register an avatar for multiple addresses and also have an unlimited number of avatars available for my use.

Well, I just got home a little while ago, enabled my Gravatar plugin for WordPress and quickly went to look at the comments on my site to see if it was working properly. Well, it isn’t. I thought there may have been an issue with my configuration so I messed around with that a little bit but the problem isn’t actually on my site, it’s on their’s.

The Gravatar site is reporting 503 HTTP errors. This is either due to site maintenance or the server is overloaded with requests and having capacity issues. I suspect the latter. I figured there would be a large number of people hitting the site and it does appear that it has brought the service to its knees. I am sure the admins over at gravatar.com are working frantically to get the service restored.

I doubt, although this may be the case, that they launched the service, made $10 off a large number of users, and then shut the service down. Hopefully the service will be back up soon. I look forward to seeing my avatars around the web, especially this site.

Until next time…
